THE ORPHAN Reflections on 16 To Midnight by Dan
Reluctantly, I pressed record on the tape and opened the microphones. I was tired, hungry and I remember feeling like this was going to be a waste of time.
We started to speak.
How wrong was I!?
16 to Midnight has had a slow evolution, for me anyway. It started out as just something to do with some cool recording equipment and a wild imagination. It has turned into a very creative and therapeutic orphan of mine and Eric's that allows us to unlock our subconscious and release it into the ears, and hearts, of our newly corrupted fans.
One of my favorite things about the show is the way our guests and regulars seemed to emerge from the mystical murkiness of creation and evolve into "people". They each have their own voice, their own minds, their own way of talking and their own way of thinking.
As far as a favorite regular, I can't really say. They're all like my children because they were born from that first word that came out of our mouth and still continue to grow. I will say however that one of my very favorites (and this may shock Eric) is Joey Calgon. There is something very sentimental, almost sympathetic, about an aspiring comic, spilling out his jokes that will never be funny because it's his dream.
That may be the common thread between all of our characters; they all have dreams. Mr. & Mrs. Roulock dream of acceptance. Larry and Gale dream of being professional jazz personalities. Danny just wants to give his mother a better life.
Okay. Maybe it's a stretch. But what isn't on this show.
As for our "fans", those who have heard and enjoyed the tapes, all I can say is thanks. Thanks for listening and for the support. Thanks for giving the show a chance.
It's a weird monster.
I only hope that someday it will be on the air.
That's MY dream.
Stop jumping on the bed,
Dan.
